Vale Andy O’Neill

It is with a heavy heart that the Greensborough Football Club informs you of the passing of former GFC dual premiership player and club stalwart Andy O’Neill. Andy passed away on Wednesday 26th February 2025, aged 77.
Andy was a local boy who when old enough started his senior career in 1962 in the U17’s as a 13-year-old! In 1963, while still in the U17’s, he played his first game in the Reserves. He continued in the U17’s & the Reserves in 1964 & 1965.
Andy broke into the Senior team in 1966 playing in 20 of the 21 games that season – including the Club’s famous 14-point victory over Templestowe in the Grand Final. This was followed up in 1967 with another premiership (see picture below with Andy circled) – again over Templestowe – with Andy now a permanent fixture on the half back flank. The premiership teams of 1966 & 1967, led by the great John Carmody, were made up of some of the greatest Greensborough players of all time and Andy O’Neill will always be remembered as a vital part of both.
Andy played on until the end of 1970, when he hung up the boots after 62 senior games.
From the early 1950’s until the late 1960’s, his father Bill O’Neill had the fruit shop in the Main St, just up from the pub. Bill was a great supporter of the Boro, and for years donated the ¾ time oranges for all 3 teams.
Andy’s legacy at the GFC lives on with both his sons, Robbie and Mark O’Neill playing juniors for the club. Robbie went on to the seniors, playing 200+ open age games and is a GFC Life member. Both Mark and Robbie continue to be huge supporters and contributors to our senior club.
Our thoughts are with Robbie, Mark and Andy’s grand kids – Belinda, Bill & Haley
